New iMacs to Be Released in Fall 2009

Who doesn't love the new iMacs?  Mac lovers have always felt that these computer units are far superior to PC in terms of usability and design.  They say that, even tough the iMacs are more pricey than their PC counterparts, the investment is really worth it.

Well, if you're one of the millions of Mac lovers out there, you will now have more reason to rejoice as Apple is set to launch new iMacs this year by fall.  Currently, Twitter and Facebook users have been speculating as to what these newer iMacs have in store for them.  The most obvious change to the new versions of the iMacs has something to do with their screens.

The new iMacs would have screens that are bigger than the previous versions -- with the larger screens measuring 21.5 and 27 inches.  Mac developers have always thought that these screens should be able to show images and video in high definition.  The iMac's screen feels as if it "bleeds" to the edge of the unit, making the screen appear larger.  Many users are disappointed with the fact that they can't choose whether they want to have a glossy or a matte screen.  The newer versions only come with glossy screens.  Further, some people who feel that iMacs should be more portable think that the 27-inch iMac is somewhat too large for their taste.

Other features of the newer versions

If you owned an older version of the iMac, you'd notice that it comes with a black plastic back.  The newer versions, however, come in an all-aluminum case, making these models appear very sleek.  Also, iMac developers mention that the screens of the iMacs are LED-backlit widescreen TFT active-matrix LCDs with in-plane switching technology.  This superior technology allows the units to show countless colors and at all resolutions -- whether low- or high-definition.

What makes this in-plane switching technology special?  According to them, this technology allows flat-panel displays to keep image quality at any angle.  To illustrate a point, low-quality screens do not allow the user to view what's being displayed on the screen if the user is looking at the screen at an extreme angle.  With the new iMac, this is a thing of the past.

While Apple has kept mum on the speed of these new iMacs, several loyal users are keeping their expectations high.  They are also anticipating seeing the Magic Mouse that comes with the newer iMacs.

Looking Forward to OLED Laptops

If you have been following the latest in display technologies, then you are probably well aware of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology.  OLED technology is one of the newest technologies to be used in display monitors and other display devices.  While a number of companies have already made their own OLED device prototypes, the technology hasn't yet become openly available to the public.  The latest news in the industry, however, is that companies are setting 2010 production dates for OLED laptops.  Read on to learn more about OLED technology and why you should be looking forward to OLED laptops.

What is OLED technology?

In the most basic terms, OLED technology is a type of display that makes use of organic molecules to produce light.  The organic molecules are arranged into thin, film layers called the conductive and emmissive layers.  When electrical currents are sent into these layers, the electrons react and combine with atoms, resulting in light emission.  In general, stronger electrical currents will produce brighter lights.  OLED technology has a number of advantages over liquid crystal displays (LCD) and light-emitting diode (LED) displays, which make OLED technology a great replacement for many of the LCD and LED displays currently in the market.

Advantages of OLED technology

-  The organic layers of an OLED are made of plastic, allowing manufacturers to create displays that are lighter, thinner, and more flexible than LEDs or LCDs.
-  OLED displays are generally brighter than LEDs and LCDs because they can be designed with multiple layers, plus they do not require the use of glass, which absorbs some of the brightness produced by LED and LCD screens.
-  OLED displays do not make use of backlighting, which means that OLED displays can have larger fields of view of up to 170 degrees.  Furthermore, OLED displays use much less power than LCDs, because of the fact that they don't use backlighting.
-  OLED displays can handle high-definition resolution and quality.
-  Some of the other advantages of OLED displays include faster response times (even less than 0.01 ms), true black contrast, and lower production and retail costs.

OLED in laptops

So what does this mean for the laptop industry?  Basically, the introduction of OLED screens into laptops will result in systems that have much more effective, efficient, and practical displays.  An OLED laptop will weigh less, use less battery power, and be thinner than most of the laptop displays currently available.  Your OLED laptop may even be designed with roll-up designs for better portability.  Some of the companies that are planning to release OLED laptops and other OLED devices in 2010 include Samsung, Sony, Lenovo, Nokia, and LG.

In the world of laptops, dual-screen monitors are not exactly an industry standard.  Still, that hasn't stopped companies from producing such portable, multiple-screen laptop goodness.  One such company is gScreen.  Although the name may not be as familiar to you as Asus, Dell, or Lenovo, gScreen's chief designer and founder is looking to change that with the gScreen Spacebook 2009.  The Spacebook is a dual-screen laptop that is currently in development and is planned to arrive in stores sooner than you may think.  Read on to learn more about the features, specs, and screen real estate glory that is the gScreen Spacebook 2009.

Dual-screen technology

The gScreen Spacebook 2009 is taking the concept of dual-screen technology to new heights.  The laptop has two identical screens that are each 15.4 inches in size.  This is a step above and beyond Lenovo's currently available ThinkPad W700ds, which has two screens, one measuring 17 inches and the other only 10.6 inches.  With two 15.4-inch displays, you can enjoy over 30 inches of screen space.  Also, both monitors are made with one of the latest trends in flat-screen technology, backlit LED displays.  This means that you can expect vibrant colors, excellent contrast with blacker blacks and whiter whites, and better screen visibility in various lighting conditions.

Planned specifications

The gScreen Spacebook packs a great deal of features that will help you get full use out of your dual-screen machine.  First, the Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 2.26-GHz processor gives you a fair amount of power, although gScreen could have done better by using the new Mobile Core i7 processors instead.  The Spacebook also has two sticks of 2GB DDR2 SO-DIMM memory, a 320GB 7200-rpm hard drive, and DVD player.  GScreen knows you're going to need a lot of juice to power the dual-screen configuration, so they give you a choice between the NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GT 512MB and the NVIDIA Quadro FX 1700M 512MB.  You also get an HDMI port, a 9-cell battery, and IEEE 1394 1 graphics card output compatibility.

Production and release information

GScreen has announced on their website that they plan to release the Spacebook series by the end of 2009, hopefully in December.  To prove their dedication to the proposed launch date, gScreen has released a number of actual photographs of a prototype.  The Spacebook will be sold primarily through Amazon.com, with shipment available to a number of countries around the world.  Through time, gScreen plans to sell their product on some of the other Amazon sites (including Canada, Japan, UK, Germany, and France), as well as on Buy.com and Newegg.com.  You may want to start saving now if you're hoping to buy this beast of a laptop, because word has it that it will cost a little under $3,000, which isn't so bad considering some of the other dual-screen laptops in production are planned to cost well over gScreen's target price.
