Symantec is awful, and slows your machine down.

Avast!Home Edition is free, and has kept me completely safe for years.

Before, I use AVG, but it ate a lot of my resources and it cannot detect USB virus, I change my anti-virus to Avira Antivir. I feel more secured with antivir.

Avira Antivir gets excellent results in the VB100 tests, and there's a free version. That's what i use.

Well, as far as security for your Windows XP is concerned I've got no problems with Avira Antivirus. It's really useful and you'll be free of virus, most of all i love it due to its free version.

Avira is by far the best in the free anti-virus market. Maximum PC recently did a review comparing 8 Av's and free Avira came out on top with the highest detection rating.

NOD32 and Kaspersky are also very good anti-virus if you want to pay. They are both excellent.
