Default Intel i7 and intel i5 what's the difference ?

I bought a intel i7 processor half a year ago and now I see intel i5 is available on the market, but my motherboard that support intel i7 doesnt support the newer intel i5 and i3. So what's so special about intel i5 intel i3 and why did they decide to make a new motherboard system for that particular CPU ?

From what I can see of the system specs the intel i7 is the faster CPU over both intel i5 and intel i3
