Default 8gb - How much is too much?

The memory standard nowadays seems to be a solid 2gb of RAM - but if you're a hardcore gamer, or experienced photoshop user like myself, you'll want more - but how much is too much?

Today at best buy I noticed a machine for $700 that had 8gb of RAM. I figured this was just way too much... but what do you all think? Will we really be needing this much in the future? I doubt it.

Discuss.

I have 4gb RAM in my machine, and i still struggle to fill it all up.

What else was in the machine? Was it 8gb DDR2 or DDR3 RAM?

It was DDR2, which is the reason why they loaded it up with so much. DDR2 memory is so cheap now - two years ago I bought 2gb for $80, now I can buy 4gb for $45.

It depends... DDR2 is phasing out, and DDR3 will take over. In a couple more years, there will possibly be a DDR4, etc. The standard will always change, although the number might not.

I think 4gb will stay the standard for a while, even through DDR3 and DDR4+

I can't even fathom having over 4gb of RAM unless you're doing some hardcore video encoding or running several games at once... there's really no need for 8gb.

In the future I do think we will need large amounts of memory like 10gbs+ of ram. But then again you have to remember the further we advance in technology the cheaper ram will be. Just like the terabyte hard drives. When those first came out the hd was around 500-1,000 dollars. Now 1 terabyte can be bought for 100-300 dollars.

700$ it's very expensive for 8gb memory. my opinion. if you do graphic, it can ve very helpful , but if you do it for movie and games, also helpful. coz in the industry all the time on the market come more and more updates!

You are asking for too much but there is no limit of the technology today so when you are finding the best at that time search for the best and maximum version. Then you can get too much.
